FIVE vehicles careered off a road -- with at least one landing on its roof -- after an early morning diesel spill.

The spill, which is believed to have covered a five mile stretch of Grane Road between Haslingden and Blackburn, is thought to have occured at around 7.15 this morning.

In one incident three vehicles came off the road near to the Grey Mare pub with one ---a silver Ford Ka -- landing on its roof in a field. The male driver was able to free himself with minor injuries.

In a separate incident, further up the road towards Haslingden, two cars skidded and collided. None of the occupants were seriously injured.

Van driver Adrian McCullagh, from Huddersfield, who is currently working in Blackburn, said: "I came round the corner and just completely lost control as the van skidded on what I thought was diesel.

"My van ended up in a field at the side of the road.

"I was terrified when I spotted one car on its roof but the occupants had managed to get themselves free before I got out of my van."

Traffic officer PC Paul Carrall, who was at the scene, said: "The problem has been the rain and we need to get the road clean before it rains again or conditions could become dangerous again.
