A CAMPAIGN group calling to bring back trains to deserted East Lancashire tracks has stepped up its fight with a walk along the route it wants to restore.
SELRAP -- the Skipton and East Lancashire Rail Action Partnership -- walked the old line between Colne and Earby to draw attention to its cause as part of Pendle Walking Festival.
Pendle MP Gordon Prentice is backing the group's bid to restart trains between Colne, Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales. And he wants to persuade Liberal Democrat-controlled Pendle Borough Council to back the scheme in a bid to get Transport Secretary Alaistair Darling and the rail authorities to re-open the line.
He said: "I am fully behind SELRAP and their walk along the line to Earby. It would cost about £30million to re-open the line which wouldn't buy very many miles of motorway or trunk road.
"I hope to persuade the Council to back the scheme and then work on the rail authorities and the Government to follow suit. This would be a major boost to Pendle, East Lancashire and the whole Pennine region."
