TWO people died after a lorry lost control and smashed through the central reservation on the M6 motorway on Monday.
The 44-ton Renault wagon, being driven by a 51-year-old man from the Wigan area, lost control while travelling northbound near to junction 27 at Leyland at around 4.30pm.
The lorry, which was fully laden with building materials, crossed over on to the southbound carriageway and collided with two Nissan Micras.
The drivers of both cars, a 59-year-old woman from the Wigan area and a 59-year-old man from the London area, were killed instantly.
A third car, driven by a 48-year-old man from Darwen, then ploughed into the crashed vehicles.
The driver of the HGV and suffered serious injuries and is at the Royal Preston Hospital. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening. The driver of the Astra was treated for shock at the scene, but refused hospital treatment.
