THE Football Association of Wales today insisted they are confident of hanging on to Mark Hughes.

Wales boss Hughes has emerged as one of the early favourites to replace Graeme Souness at Ewood Park.

But Welsh officials believe the lure of beating England and qualifying for the finals of the 2006 World Cup will deter Hughes from taking a job in the Premiership.

Hughes still has two years left on his contract with the FAW and their international department head, Mark Evans, believes the Rovers job has come too soon for the former Manchester United star.

"We want to keep him at Wales and there are a couple of challenges ahead for him here," said Evans.

"We are playing Northern Ireland in a big game tomorrow night and then there is the massive match against England next month.

"There is unfinished business here and we are all looking towards the World Cup finals in two years' time.

"Mark's relationship with the FAW is very good and I think we will keep him on this side of the border."
