A YOUNG actor from Rossendale has added to his growing reputation after winning the title of Best Newcomer at the TV Quick Awards.

Sam Aston, 11, from Bacup, who plays cheeky Chesney Brown in Coronation Street, scooped the prestigious prize at the glittering awards ceremony last night.

The promising red-haired youngster was with his Street co-stars when he took to the stage at London's Dorchester to receive the well-deserved award.

He beat off stiff competition from Michael Higgs, who plays gangster Andy Hunter in EastEnders and Lucy Pargeter, who plays fiery Chastity Dingle in Emmerdale.

His award contributed to Corrie's success with the show's stars picking up four gongs - their Albert Square rivals managed just one.

Sam, whose other roles include a part in The Bill and an advert for Dairylea cheese spread, hails from the Aston acting family.

With eight brothers and sisters, Sam is the fifth member of the family to star on the street with older siblings Emily, 22, and Thomas, 16, also starring on the small screen.

They landed roles in the controversial TV adaptation of Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit, written by Accrington-born author Jeanette Winterson.

Emily became the youngest person to be nominated for a BAFTA for her performance after landing the part as Corrie's Becky Palmer, the daughter of Des Barnes's girlfriend Claire in 1996.
