TROUBLED Lancashire holiday giant MyTravel today announced it was heading for clear skies with an upbeat statement about its operations.

After a turbulent two years which have seen a series of profits warnings and senior management departures, the company said it was now close to breaking even.

MyTravel, formerly Airtours, employs more than 400 people at its centres in Accrington and Helmshore.

The company was set up by Burnley-born travel agent David Crossland who was one of the high-profile casualties when he quit as chairman. in 2003.

MyTravel chief executive Peter McHugh said he believed the operating result for the 12 months to September 30 will approach break-even.

"After a difficult start, the UK market for summer 2004 has improved," he told the Stock Exchange in a surprise statement.
