workers'
strike off
as deal is
reached
STAFF at the William Blythe's chemical plant, Church, have called off a strike after reaching a settlement over working hours.
Employees who are members of the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), staged a 24-hour walk-out last Thursday and had planned to take to the picket line for a further 24 hours today.
But talks between representatives from the TGWU and bosses have resulted in an agreement.
The union said the dispute started when the firm asked workers to commit to working 304 hours a year to cover sickness and absence, for an increase in their salaries. They are currently paid overtime to cover the shifts.
Following talks last week, an amended offer reducing the number of hours was also thrown out and 52 members of staff went out on strike for a day last Thursday.
Charles Wallace, TGWU shop steward, said: "We have managed to reach an agreement that is satisfactory for the men and the management."
