YOUNG Army Cadets learned how to live in the field and picked up many new skills on an adventure holiday with a military flavour.

The Tyldesley teenagers joined 450 others at the Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force's annual two week summer camp near Catterick in the Yorkshire Dales. They practised military and life skills and fieldcraft and took part in a full-blown military exercise with blank ammunition, smoke and thunderflash bangs.

They went mountain biking and orienteering, learned to set up camp and live in the field and spend a night under the stars -- as well as joining in disco and karaoke evenings.

The cadets, with 40 detachments in the county, welcome new members aged between 12 and 18 and there are vacancies for adult youth leaders. Training will be given to volunteers with no previous military experience. Further information is available from 0161 237 3739.
