POLICE chiefs in Greater Manchester have enlisted the help of an army of public bodies in a new £2m-plus crimebusting project.

Using state-of-the-art computer technology, the project Greater Manchester Against Crime (GMAC) will be able to access information collected by public service organisations such as the fire, ambulance and health services through to local authorities, and probation and drug action teams.

Their dealings with the causes and effects of crime, such as when incidents happen and where they take place, will be put onto a central database.

Each piece of information from the different agencies will be brought into a central repository and tagged with its source. The scheme was launched by policing minister Hazel Blears MP at the Lowry, Salford Quays, on Monday.
