A HUGE range of activities has been organised to mark the seventh annual Bury Environment Week, which runs from September 19 to 26.

Adults and children will be encouraged to save energy and money, cut waste, recycle, and even pick up some freebies.

Among the main events is an all-day environment fair on September 25 at Bury's Castle Leisure Centre, featuring more than 50 stalls and chance to win a mountain bike.

Entertainment and games have been lined up on September 18 in Bury town centre in advance of European Car Free Day, to encourage people to use alternative transport.

Motor fans are invited to a Green Fuels event at Spring Street car park on September 23, where new "greener" vehicles will be shown.

School pupils will be planting trees to help reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

There's also a challenge between students at Bury and Holy Cross colleges to save Bury from catastrophe in a virtual reality computer game.

Elsewhere, council staff will be visiting offices across the borough to offer advice about saving energy and how to install cheaper and more efficient heating systems. Theatre shows will be performed in schools, with story-telling sessions at libraries. A series of countryside walks and crafts classes have been arranged.

Visitors to Bury Council's Energy Show House at 20 Parsonage Street, Bury, can swap one normal light bulb for two energy-saving ones.

And on the final day, a lifestyle fair looking at all aspects of healthy living is to be held at the Castle Armoury.

Programmes listing the full week's events are available from public buildings across the borough.
