I CAN'T accept the planned Sports Village is as good for the people of Leigh as Wigan Metro try to make out.
Walking round the site I pictured what it will look like and the effect it will have on the nature reserve on the other side of the 'tarmac river' (Atherleigh Way).
Whoever planned the ugly idea hasn't really considered the environmental damage it will create.
But little things like damage to the environment mean nothing when investment and profit are involved.
It's a shame the people of Leigh don't seem to care about the environment our future generations will be left with.
As I sat there thinking, enjoying the noise and fumes of the by-pass, I thought back over the past 30 or so years since Wigan took control.
I added up the bits of land sold by Wigan to developers.
When you add up the value of sales of soil from under our feet it makes me wonder why they need to sell more to finance this latest big idea.
With the cutbacks and land sales over the years they should be able to build a few sports villages and still have some change.
