AN in-demand dental practice in Rossendale is to get a new waiting room in a bid to ensure it complies with new disability legislation.

The Dental Health Centre in Burnley Road, Rawtenstall, has been given planning permission to transform an empty house into a reception and waiting area.

Under the Disabilities Discrimination Act, establishments open to the public must be accessible to all members of the community and not discriminate against people with disabilities.

The practice was established in a bid to provide a dental service in the area and was officially opened by Janet Anderson, MP, in October 2002. Prior to it being built there were no dentists in the Valley accepting new NHS patients, which left thousands of people without a dentist. Around 7,000 people were put on the books in the first two weeks of it opening.

The dentists at the surgery offer treatment on the National Health Service as well as private cosmetic treatment.

Shane Morgan, the first dentist to join the practice, urged Rossendale's Development Control committee to grant permission to create the new reception area.
