AS one of the organisers of the car boot sales at Bury Sports Club, I am sorry to hear of the problems caused by inconsiderate parking, described by "Brassed-off Resident" (Letters, August 27).
I can assure the writer that we do everything to meet our obligations to local residents, and it is my experience that the police and the local authority do enforce parking laws.
When complaining, however, I would wish this anonymous writer to reflect upon the benefits of having Bury Sports Club as a neighbour. This club provides a sporting centre for the community with Cricket, rugby, squash, rounders and chess clubs openly available. A junior membership, approximately 200-strong, provides healthy and safe activity for young people. Recently a holiday club has provided child care opportunities for working parents. There are also social facilities, with a function room for hire.
Other "benefits" include an outlook over green fields for residents, incidental "free" security for Caton Close residents through lighting, CCTV occupancy etc at the rear of the houses, and protection from development of the site whilst the club is financially viable. Would the residents prefer an industrial or intensive residential development as an alternative?
Bury Sports Club is a voluntary organisation which relies almost entirely upon member subscriptions and fund-raising activities; we have no major benefactors or public funding. Car boot sales, of which there are a maximum of six in any year, are an important element of this voluntary effort.

chairman, Bury Cricket
Club, (Junior Section).
