YOUNG people in Barnoldswick have clubbed together to try and raise money for their skate park so spectators have somewhere to sit.

More than 50 skateboarders created Victory Wheelie Park Group four years ago to transform a former crazy golf course into an area for skateboarders, bikers and rollerbladers.

But now they have found younger children, parents, grandparents and people who do not skate want to watch and are sitting on the half-pipe because there is nowhere else for them to perch.

Now one member of the group, nine-year-old Shane Taylforth, who goes to Gisburn Road County Primary School, has written to Barnoldswick Town Council to ask for £250 towards the cost of a bench.

Shane wrote: "We know that you have helped us before and we thank you for this and hope you don't think we are cheeky, but some of the kids are sitting on our equipment stopping us from skating and so benches would let them watch us and still feel part of the fun so we can skate safely."

Victory Wheelie Park Group has just paid out £2,406 for a street spine and the installation of a grind rail and its budget will not stretch to a new £370 bench.

Shane's mum Jackie, who was a councillor when the group started, said: "The park is very well used and we've found one or two of the younger ones want to watch the lads doing their stuff as well."

Barnoldswick Town Council was unable to give the youngsters the money but has asked them to apply again in April.
