IT'S time to stop referring to the "Northern by-pass! The route bypasses nothing.
The Lancaster bypass was built many years ago and has proved its worth by the volume of traffic using it. It is known as M6 motorway.
What we now require is a road to link the M6 to the port of Heysham - vital to the continued use of the port to connect the Isle of Man and Eire to Northern England and Scotland as well as the south and Midlands.
The Heysham link was half built a few years ago but serves only to feed White Lund and the over-used A589. The south-bound heavies have still to use Skerton Bridge and northbound to travel through Bare. They can't even reach the A6!
The road needs to be extended to the M6 and only needs to be single carriageway with a speed limit of 40 or 50 mph to be of benefit to the whole area.
Not only would the Heysham Link remove the heavies from the congested Lancaster to Morecambe corridor but the Coastal Road and A6 through Carnforth would also benefit.
