SECRETARY of State for Education and Skills Ruth Kelly officially opened Bury's new £630,000 Adult Education Centre on Friday.

Ms Kelly, who is MP for Bolton West, will be given a tour of the centre and meet up with some of the students, before unveiling a commemorative plaque.

The centre, in Haymarket Street in the former Halifax building, opened in January and has been jointly funded by Bury Council and Greater Manchester Learning and Skills Council. The service had previously been based in the towns historic but ageing Bury Arts and Crafts Centre.

Only last month Ms Kelly's Cabinet colleague Paul Boateng MP, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, praised the centre after his own visit and tour.

Councillor Maggie Gibb, the council's executive member for lifelong learning, said: "We are delighted that the secretary of state is visiting Bury to view this new facility and see for herself how it is providing Bury people with the skills and support they need to help them get on in life."
