IF congestion congestion at the M60-A56 junction is caused by too many traffic lights and a badly-placed pedestrian crossing, as a recent correspondent suggested, what might be the cause of congestion on a four-lane motorway?
Driving too fast, too close, too erratically; being too impatient and too inconsiderate; too much acceleration and braking, and too many collisions. Isnt there one nearly every day on the M60? Too many lights, yes but brake lights not traffic lights.
The most cost-effective way to ease congestion and pollution would be speed reduction: 56mph on the M60 and 20mph through Prestwich village, with tailgating, intimidation and erratic lane-changing being a serious offence.
Remove the speed freaks and speed merchants from the system and traffic flow will be smoother and quicker. It isn't rocket science, is it?
