A GREEN-FINGERED volunteer is needed to help develop the growing skills of budding horticulturists.

Bury Council is looking for someone to take over and run the Whitefield Community Greenhouse project which is based at St Michaels RC Primary School.

The project was set up by the council with the help of Whitefield Horticultural Society secretary, John Middleton, who sadly died in August last year.

Plants grown in the greenhouse - and with the help of children from the school - were used to create an entry in Tatton Royal Horticultural Show 2004 together with the councils parks and countryside service.

Although the council will not use plants from the greenhouse for this year's entry, the project is still very much a valued addition to the community.

Pupils from St Michael's will be able to learn how to grow plants from seeds and cuttings, learn how the greenhouse works and grow plants and flowers to brighten up the school grounds in Ribble Drive.

Council parks and open spaces officer Mike Bent said: "We are looking for an enthusiastic plants person who wants to share their knowledge with the children of Whitefield and work with local volunteers."

Anyone interested in the project should contact Mr Bent or Kevin Price, the tree and woodlands officer, on 0161 253 5353 or email customerserviceEDS@bury.gov.uk
