LANCASHIRE Telegraph reporter Catherine Pye was named Young Journalist of the Year at the O2 Media Awards for Lancashire and Greater Manchester last night.

As well as Catherine's success, seven other Telegraph journalists were nominated for the ceremony, aimed at celebrating the region's most talented writers, broadcasters and photographers.

Catherine, who covers Darwen, was described by the judges as one of the North West's rising stars.

In other categories seven Telegraph staff were runners up.

These were Web Editor Paul Cockerton for the Digital Journalist of the Year category; Education Reporter Nafeesa Shan for Young Journalist of the Year; Rovers Reporter Andy Cryer for Sports Reporter of the Year; Chief Photographer Helen Brown for Photographer of the Year; feature writers Caroline Dutton and Gemma Humphreys for Entertainment Journalist of the Year; and Ben Briggs, who no longer works for the Telegraph, for Business Journalist of the Year.

Telegraph Editor Kevin Young said: "This was an excellent achievement for Catherine and well deserved.

"The number of nominations speaks volumes about the ability of our journalists.

"What's really heartening is that our other staff who were not nominated also put through outstanding entries, demonstrating our strength in depth."
