TRIBUTES have been paid to a popular Pendle doctor who went “the extra mile” for his patients.

Dr Mahboob Alam, of Gisburn Road, Higherford, who has died at the age of 74, moved to the UK from India before settling in a Colne surgery for 25 years.

The father-of-three and grand-father-of-five was well respected for his approach to medicine in the town’s health centre.

Dr Alam’s son, Nazeer, established Starmount Ltd, an ICT distributor in Lomeshaye Industrial Estate, with the help of his father.

Nazeer said: “I have never seen a doctor like my dad.

“He was old fashioned in the way he went the extra mile for all of his patients and put them before himself at all times.

“People loved him and even after he retired they continued to come to the house to find out his opinion and advice on medical issues.

“He never stopped putting people first, even in his final days.”

The GP, who also worked at hospitals in Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury and Burnley, retired from his practice 16 years ago after heart surgery.

Dr Alam met his wife Pat, a cadet nurse, in the early 1960s and they were married in 1965. The doctor was also a keen player at Nelson Chess Club and was a passionate gardner.

Dr Alam died a week after surgery in the Royal Blackburn Hospital after developing breathing difficulties.

He also leaves two other children, Naila and Nadeem, and five grand-children, Nadia, Joseph, Reuben, Jessica and Joshua.

Donations in Dr Alam’s memory for the British Heart Foundation can be left at Nazeer's office at 25/27 Churchill Way, Lomeshaye Industrial Estate, Nelson.
