TEN large coats of arms were presented to Royal Blackburn Hospital last night.

Former hospitals trust chairman Ian Woolley made the gift to celebrate the medical colleges involved in improving patient care.

The specially-commissioned engraved coats of arms are 25-inch square pieces of artwork in colour on architectural glass.

The ceremony featured a speech from Mr Woolley about the importance of education and training in delivering better patient care and a tribute to all the staff who contribute to patient care.

The coats of arms will be displayed in the hospital’s centre lecture room, which was re-named the Ian Woolley Auditorium in honour of his work.

Mr Woolley was chairman of Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Health Authority and then Blackburn, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Hospital NHS Trust from April 1984 to March 2003.

Rineke Schram, medical director, and Hazel Harding, the new hospitals trust chairman, also spoke.
