Hyndburn Disabled Persons Forum is making a tour of Tinker Brook to see the therapeutic activities such as the tree nursery, gardening and food growing areas. The activities at Tinker Brook are delivered in a training and work-type environment, which is available for people with disabilities and learning difficulties.

Tinker Brook Nursery, in partnership with the local NHS Primary Care Trust, provides opportunities for people with learning difficulties to learn about organic gardening and food production.

The Forum will be able to see an ecologically-sound toilet made from straw. The loo was an Oswaldtwistle PROSPECTS Panel project to enhance the area and facilities. It houses a disabled toilet for use by the people who have plots of land at Tinker Brook. The project was organised by the PROSPECTS Panel and CommuniCare to complement the community tree nursery and food-growing projects at the site. The straw building replaced a portable toilet.

Visitors will also be able to look around the tree nursery, which was launched by The PROSPECTS Foundation in partnership with the Green Concern charity.

Work at the site has included turning an overgrown piece of land into an organic food-growing site, growing over 3,000 trees from seed for local use and developing a nature trail.

The Hyndburn Disabled Person's Forum visit will take place on Thursday, 20th August 2009, from 10.30 am – 12.30pm at Tinker brook, Rhoden Road, Oswaldtwistle.

The Forum is tackling issues to raise awareness of and discuss the issues that people with disabilities face and looking at activities that are available to them. The Forum is currently supporting initiatives such as the Hyndburn Disability Centre to be located in the Arndale Centre, swimming sessions for people with disabilities and a disabled persons’ changing room in Accrington town centre.

Hyndburn residents with physical, mental and/or sensory impairments or long-term illness in the area are being urged to help make Hyndburn an easier place to live, work and visit. The Hyndburn Disabled Forum is seeking new people from the local community to join their Forum.
