A PICNIC site is to get a total refurbishment at a cost of more than £5,000.

Todmorden Town Council’s amenities committee was told that Lobb Mill was in need of an overhaul and Calderdale Council has offered to improve the site.

An inspectors report of the site said: “Dense shrubs to the front of the site are uninspiring, outdated and provide an unwelcoming and poor impression of the site to passers by.”

The report highlighted 12 faults and added: “All picnic tables need refurbishing or replacing.

“There is a shortage of picnic tables. The current litter bins are not fixed and are of poor quality. The site is not maintained regularly.”

Mike Harrop, Calderdale Council’s deputy head of recreation, Todmorden Town Council clerk Catherine Emberson and development officer Hazel Stobbs were joined in the inspection by town councillor Margareta Holmested, who said she felt good ideas to improve Lobb Mill had been put forward.

However, she said urgent action was needed to chop down a tree which could fall and block the roadway.

Mr Harrop said shrubs could be removed from the front of the site and the fence could be pulled down.

He said the council would supply and fit two new litter bins and a picnic table.
