AN East Lancashire MP is calling for an inquiry after his mother died from a suspected hospital superbug infection.

Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans said his mum, Betty Evans, had a routine operation to remove a gallstone from her bile duct on March 17 at Singleton Hospital, Swansea, but died from Clostridium Difficle on Friday(march27).

Mr Evans, whose mother would have been 87 on April 21, said: “We are going through a couple of emotions: trauma, anger and a sense of loss.

“My mother was amazing, she was an inspiration. She was full of life and had a lot of friends.

“No other family should have to go through this, she didn’t deserve this, nobody deserves this.”

Betty had suffered from cancer of the oesophagus but was having radiation treatment and Mr Evans said doctors thought she would not die from the condition.

Mr Evans added: “It was thanks to my mother’s constant support that I was able to follow my dream of a career in politics. She comforted me and gave me sustenance during my political losses and that was all worth it when she was able to share in my joy on being elected Member of Parliament for the Ribble Valley in 1992.

“She loved the Ribble Valley and celebrated her 80th birthday in the constituency where many constituents made her feel incredibly welcome.

“I am grateful to all my friends in the Ribble Valley who have shown me their love and sympathy during this most difficult time of my life.”
