COMPANIES that are willing to take a risk during the recession could reap the benefits in the long run, according to a leading businessman.

President of East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, John Getty, was speaking at the ‘Chamber Curry Club’ event at Ewood Park, Blackburn.

Mr Getty, chairman and chief executive of PDS Engineering, Nelson, said it was vital that businesses were still prepared to plan for the future, but he attacked the Government’s role in the current financial meltdown.

He said: “In these difficult times it is very easy to lay on the floor and give up.

“In fact, there is no better time to start up businesses and for a business to think laterally and look at its options for growth.

“We can move forward in these times but we have to want to do it. If we are not prepared to put the effort in ourselves and do a business plan why should any one else help?

“It pains me to see the Government putting money into lame duck companies. The only way forward is to keep up the good work and make this country great again.”

Mr Getty was speaking to around 80 business people from across East Lancashire who attended the Chamber of Commerce event.

The next curry club event is on May 22.
