PLANS for an MOT centre on one of Braford’s busiest roads have been refused for highway safety reasons.

The application to convert a tyre shop at 142a Thornton Road into a business offering vehicle repairs and MOT services was submitted to Bradford Council by a Mr Ali earlier this year.

But the application has now been refused – with planners saying there was a lack of parking spaces at the unit, and this could lead to highway issues on one of the main routes into the city centre.

Highways officers said: “The process of fitting tyres or an exhaust is relatively simple and would not take long. However, carrying out an MOT can be time consuming with vehicles being left on site for one day or more.

“The proposal would require at least one off-street parking space for staff and six spaces for customers.”

The planning report that refused the plan referenced the highways concerns, saying: “The lack of appropriate car parking provision has been highlighted alongside insufficient space for vehicle manoeuvring. The latter would result in unsafe entry and exit of the adjacent highway, which is otherwise a principle adopted highway serving the city centre and immediate surroundings.

“(The proposal) would result in clear, severe, and unacceptable harm to highways safety.”
