A man has been severely injured by a firework as he tried to save it from hitting a child.

Police are looking for witnesses and information following the incident, which happened on Sunday afternoon in Seasiders Way in Blackpool.

Officers say that at around 1.40pm, in the middle of the Blackpool v Bristol Rovers football match, a man suffered severe injuries to his hand and arm.

A spokesperson for the police said: "It was reported the man had suffered the injury after trying to move a pyrotechnic device which had been thrown close to a child.

"The man, aged in his 50s, was treated by officers at the scene and later taken to Royal Preston Hospital for further treatment. 

"An investigation into the circumstances around the injury is ongoing.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who saw the incident or who has any mobile phone footage."
