A children's book bench trail has been created in a town centre.

Primary school children from Chorley have designed 14 colourful creations depicting their favourite characters from their favourite books.

The designs are painted onto benches and are scattered across Chorley town centre and form a trail for families to explore and enjoy.

A spokesperson for the council said: "These brightly coloured benches are designed and decorated by eleven schools in Chorley, working in partnership with Edge Hill University, each with a design based on a popular children’s book, encouraging children to explore the story while decorating their bench.

"This year Adlington Library and Edge Hill University have also created benches for the trail.

"These will be scattered around the town centre for people to find.

"Simply download a trail leaflet and off you go. On the back of the leaflet will be the Book Bench Quiz.

"Find the Book Bench on the map to help you to answer the question.

"Each Book Bench will have a QR code on it, just scan the code with your smartphone to display all the information you need about the book.

"After the event, children will get to enjoy their book bench within their school, to inspire reading for years to come."

The primary schools taking part include:

  • Adlington Primary School
  • Balshaw Lane Community Primary School
  • Charnock Richard CE Primary School
  • Coppull Parish CE Primary School
  • Mawdesley St Peter’s CE Primary School
  • Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School
  • St Chad’s Catholic Primary School
  • St George’s CE Primary School
  • St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School
  • St James’ CE Primary School

The book benches will be left in place until June 6.
