MOUNTAIN rescue volunteers have helped to airlift an elderly man to safety.
The volunteers from Rossendale Pendle Mountain Rescue Team were called into action yesterday at around 11.20am with a report that an 80-year-old man had fainted with a low pulse, shallow breathing and a period of unconsciousness.
The man had fainted near the Crompton Cross area just above Clowbridge Reservoir.
A mountain rescue team spokesperson said: "The team responded on blue lights and met the ambulance crew at the same time as the air ambulance to jointly assess the gentleman.
"After a thorough assessment, it was decided to airlift the gentleman to hospital for further treatment.
"We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets to enjoy the hills again soon."
The volunteers then returned to their base to await the next call and have reminded the public that their organisation is a charity that depends on donations to continue doing its work.
