THE concrete columns, the dark spaces - all instantly recognisable to anyone who used Blackburn shopping centre’s new car park - pictured here shortly after it opened in 1967.
The car park was an integral part of the centre’s design, situated on the roof of the main shopping precinct and with several tiled staircases leading down to the shops below.
Some of the new spaces proved to be a bit of a tight squeeze for some drivers and there always seemed to be confusion about the correct way to drive round - you’d often meet a car going the wrong way and heading towards you.
