NORTH West Ambulance Service has urged people to only call 999 in a life-threatening emergency as the service is stretched thin.
The organisation is currently dealing with a "high number of incidents", leaving staff busier than usual.
People in the most serious condition are being prioritised, leaving other patients waiting longer for an ambulance.
A spokesman for the service said: "We’re very busy with emergencies right now.
"Our staff are working hard to respond as soon as possible but they may take longer than expected.
"We're prioritising those in the most serious condition so you may be waiting longer.
"Only call 999 in a life threatening emergency and consider other options if you can."
Anyone in need of medical care who is not in a life-threatening condition is urged to visit a walk-in centre, call NHS 111 or visit 111.nhs.uk, book an appointment with their GP, or visit a pharmacy for advice.
