IT was the supercar which for three series held the record for going round the Top Gear test track quicker than any other car.

The Gumpert Apollo was built in Germany and was capable of speeds of over 220mph and cost around £215,000.

But anyone in the UK who wanted to get their hands on one would have to come to Burnley.

For in 2007 Burnley’s Racetech UK became the sole UK dealer for supercar.

Racetech’s managing director Andrew Ward, said: “There’s nothing that compares to it. It’s a pure performance vehicle. They are aiming to build 40 or 50 a year and we are hoping to get 15 of those each year.”

The Gumpert was designed by Roland Gumpert who was the designer of the prototype that became the Audi quattro which dominated worked rallying in the early 1980s.

The Apollo had a twin-turbo V8 engine which produced 650 bhp and would accelerate from 0-60mph in under three seconds.

Pop star and well-known petrol head Jay Kay had shown an interest in buying one of the cars.
