A RECYCLING centre has been hit by a fire.

Firefighters from Lancaster and Morecambe were called to reports of a blaze in a commercial building on Ovangle Road, Lancaster.

On arrival they found the fire involved a recycling building on fire. A large quantity of waste materials was on fire and crews set about tackling the fire using an aerial ladder platform, ground monitor and hose reels.

There was a large amount of smoke being generated by the fire and as a precaution crews advised any residents being affected by the smoke to close their windows and doors.

At 5:30am this morning, firefighters managed to reduce the smoke and the earlier precautionary advice to close any windows and doors for those living locally was stood down.

At 7am, the number of fire engines at the scene of the fire was to be reduced to two. Crews will continue to monitor for any hot spot areas and dampen down using hose reel jets.

A spokesman for the fire crews last night, said: "We have six fire crews along with aerial support in attendance at fire is involving a recycling waste building in Lancaster.

"A large amount of smoke is being produced and anyone in the locality being affected is advised to close windows and doors as a precaution."
