A STAR of the Aussie soap Home and Away had strong connections to Darwen
Actress Susie Rugg who played Brodie Hanson in the series shown on Channel 5 was the niece of chip shop owner Chris Rugg who ran Friar Rugg’s in Bridge Street.
In 2002, Susie sent a get well message to her grandma Ethel who was seriously ill.
Susie’s dad Gerrard had recently visited his brother and met the staff at the chippy.
When Susie learned that they were fans of her show she also sent them a signed picture to put up in Friar Rugg’s with the message “To all the girls at the Friar Rugg’s - keep watching and smiling.”
