A POLICE officer is in a serious condition in hospital after being involved in a car accident.

Emergency services were called at around 6.15pm on Monday after a police van crashed into another vehicle near the Plough Inn, Chorley.

An air ambulance along with firefighters and paramedics were scrambled to the scene, and the officer was taken to hospital.

A Lancashire police spokesman has confirmed that the officer has suffered serious injuries though they are not thought to be life threatening.

It is understood that the driver of the other vehicle was also taken to hospital for treatment, though her injuries were thought to be minor.

A police spokesman said: ""The driver and sole occupant of the police car, a male officer, was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"His injuries are thankfully not believed to be life threatening."
