BLACKBURN with Darwen Council’s historic first-ever virtual meeting remembered borough shooting victim Aya Hachem.

New Mayor Cllr Iftakhar Hussain named the town’s ARC Project which helps refugees and asylum seekers as one of his two charities for his year in office in memory of the 19-year-old student.

Thursday’s 72-minute online meeting began with The Dean of Blackburn, The Very Rev Peter Howell-Jones, praying for Miss Hachem, and there was a minute’s silence for her, the late Cllr John Pearson and town hall coronavirus victim Dave Cooper.

Borough leader Cllr Mohammed Khan sent the council’s condolences to her family and friends.

He also announced Blackburn Town Hall would be illuminated purple this weekend to support worldwide efforts to highlight the Black Lives Matter message in the wake of the death of George Floyd after being restrained by US police in the US city of Minneapolis.

Cllr Hussain named The East Lancashire Hospice as his other Mayoral charity.
