Armed police have closed a road and are negotiating with a man after he was seen brandishing a pitchfork in a residential street.

Emergency services were called to the incident just after 8am on Friday morning.

A heavy police presence remains in the area and the ambulance service are also in attendance.

Calls were initially made to the police from residents who said the man was walking around Dovedale Avenue in Preston with a sword.

He was found at an address and a police negotiator is now at the scene.

A spokesperson for the police said: "We were called around 8.05am on Friday to a report of suspicious circumstances in Dovedale Avenue, Preston.

"It was reported a man was seen walking on the street with a sword.

"Officers attended with the man found at an address in possession of a pitchfork and knife.

"Following concerns for his welfare a cordon has been established with armed officers and a police negotiator at the scene."

The man, a 54-year-old from Preston was eventually arrested on suspicion of affray.
