PENDLE MP Andrew Stephenson has been given specific responsibility for overseeing the controversial HS2 high-speed rail project.

The £106billion scheme was last week given the go-ahead by Prime Minister Boris Johnson despite concerns over delays, cost- overruns, and its environmental impact.

Yesterday it was also confirmed that Mr Stephenson would have special responsibility for supervising the Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme to develop high-speed trains across the Pennines.

Mr Stephenson, made rail minister in last week's government reshuffle, said: "It is essential we keep a firm grip on these vital projects.

"I will work with HS2 Ltd and partners across the Midlands and the North to deliver vital connections, spread prosperity and level up this country."

Northern Powerhouse Partnership director Henri Murison said: "It is fitting a Northern MP has been chosen to take this vital role looking at how the two major projects can integrate fully for the maximum benefit of the North."
