PEOPLE are still living in unsafe accommodation admitted the Government as it emerged that it was warned to remove the cladding used on Bolton student block The Cube from buildings.

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick said more needed to be done and "faster" when questioned on BBC's flagship programme Question Time, which was staged in Bolton last night.

Member of the audience Alex Gill said: "It has been over two years since the Grenfell tragedy. Has the Government done enough to tackle unsafe cladding given the recent fire in Bolton."

Students were forced to flee their flats as flames tore through The Cube on Friday. Now an investigation is underway with concerns raised about the cladding covering the student apartment block and is said to have partly caused the rapid spread of blaze.

Mr Jenrick said: "We have done a lot but we need to do a lot more and the things we are doing we need to do even faster because people are still in homes that are unsafe, everybody in this country deserves to go to sleep at night thinking that them and their loved ones are safe."

He added a review found that the building safety system was found "wanting" and needed fundamental change.

Mr Jenrick said that the he was not aware of a letter from people in Greater Manchester asking for help to remove cladding from buildings and told there was no money available.

And he admitted he was not sure of the exact number of buildings with the same cladding as the Bolton block but said it would be over a 1,000.

He praised the firefighters for "undoubtedly saved people's lives".

Labour's Richard Burgon said: "It is also the case that there could be 1,000 building with this kind of cladding on.

"The Government has asked not compelled private owners of these blocks to remove the cladding, asked not instructed. It comes back to the big question, if profit is pursued regardless of any considerations, you get for example cheaper more dangerous cladding being put on despite health and safety warnings.

"I think what happened at Grenfell and what happened in Bolton showcases that in one of the richest countries in the world things are not as safe as they should be — why because people are not put first, profit is put first."

Lib-Dems Chuka Umunna.said: "In relation to this particular cladding was use dint he building in Bolton, one of my colleagues Angela Smith, she raised adding the particular cladding used in the Bolton building to the list of cladding which should be removed from buildings and Lord Younger , the Conservative Housing Minister refused to take the action to give the order that the cladding should be removed.

"It's unbelievable if you think about it, 2019 after Grenfell, we have had the fire in Bolton, there have been first in Barking, Crewe. The fact the this is still going on illustrates the the Government definitely hasn't done nearly enough."
