TWO members of Preston Richard Emergency Planning team accompanied David Brown, principal engineer of The Canals and River Trust, on his inspection of the dams at Killington Lake.

The reservoir feeds Peasey Beck, the banks of which run through the parish, and subsequently supplies the Lancaster Canal at Crooklands. Should the dams fail the consequent flooding would cause considerable flood damage downstream from the reservoir.

The engineer was able to report that the integrity of the dams was being successfully maintained, that there was a generic plan in case of an emergency (including 24 hour on-call staff) and that the sluice gates were in good condition.

THE First Responder’s team have lost two valuable members this year. As a result, more responders are needed to provide life-saving assistance in cases of medical collapse.

The area covers Preston Richard, Preston Patrick, Lupton, Stainton, Natland, New Hutton, Old Hutton, Oxenholme, and parts of south Kendal.

More information is available by logging on to nwas-responders.info, telephoning team leader Martin Smith on 015395 67453 or email martinsmith@kencomp.net.

JEAN Fry was re-elected president of Preston Patrick and Preston Richard WI at the annual meeting.

The group has collected 20 boxes for the Boxes of Hope Appeal. A minute’s silence was observed in memory of Ethel Dewhurst, a member for almost 50 years, who died recently.

After the business of the meeting members enjoyed a cup of tea and a light-hearted quiz.

STARS of the week at St Patrick’s CE School were Ollie Robinson for his super writing, Evie Robinson for always working cooperatively and Ella Allen for being responsible and reliable. The headteacher’s award was presented to William Taylor for his brilliant support in reception.

BURTON-IN-KENDAL...

THE Act of Remembrance at Burton War Memorial conducted by the Rev Graham Burrows was well-attended.

The names of local military personnel who gave their lives in both world wars were recounted. Prayers were said.

The last post sounded across the village, performed by Jonanthan Whiteley from Chapel le Dale.

Poppy wreathes and tributes were laid by Kathryn Smith on behalf of the British Legion, Paul Rogers, chairman of Burton Parish Council from the residents of Burton.

Cllr Brian Cooper laid a wreath on behalf of South Lakeland District Council.

THE tea dance, organised by Age UK South Lakes, held at Burton Memorial Hall, was a great success. The Lottery Community Fund is sponsoring the series of 20 popular dances across the region; 75 people attended in Burton and the feedback was really positive.

Charlotte Robinson and her colleagues from the volunteer support office were delighted that so many people enjoyed themselves.

BURTON Singers Christmas concert will be held on December 21. More details with follow.

JOHN Walker, north west area manager of the charity Bloods Bikes Lancashire and Lakes, gave an inspirational talk to Burton WI members.

He explained the vital, life-saving work of this little-known organisation in which all members are volunteers - nobody is paid.

The service operates the transport service 365 days a year in all weathers, night and day, delivering urgent blood supplies, patient records, blood samples, medical equipment and treatments and saving the NHS hundreds of thousands of pounds each year.

Wholly dependent on public donations, awarded a collective MBE with The Queens’ Award for Voluntary Service, of which they are rightly proud.

Visit the website for more details of how to volunteer or donate to this organisation.

OLD HUTTON...

THE primary school’s new learning pod is officially open.

The children would like to say a special thank you to their guest of honour, Sam Martin, who inspired their artwork, for joining them to cut the ribbon.

Thank you to Claire also for helping class four create such a spectacular mural in their beautiful new learning space.

The children are in love with their little pod, which has already been used for music lessons, story time, reflections, learning support and as a polling station.
Many congratulations to pupil Gabriella Pettigrew, who won a gold medal at the British Taekwondo Championship recently and now holds the 2019 British title for her weight category. She is also the 2019 Scottish Taekwondo Champion from a prior event.
Class one and two explored World War One and remembrance as part of the outreach scheme from the Tullie House Museum. They followed the story of Poppy and her brother Wilfred, using objects and costumes from the museum’s collection.

This was a fantastic opportunity to experience interactive storytelling, with the drama and costumes being very much appreciated by the children. The photographs, cards, pictures, medals and more delicate artefacts were very inspiring.
The Christian value of humility was the focus for the school’s special community remembrance service held on November 11.

It was beautifully planned and led by the Collective Worship Committee pupils, with moving contributions by the choir, flutes and readers.

They raised a large amount in donations given for poppies and in the service collection for the British Legion.

The pre-school and playgroup are very excited about their silent auction, which runs until the end of November.

There are many wonderful lots, and bids that can be made on their Facebook page.

MEMBERS of the WI held their annual meeting and thanked Margaret Sproat for her time as president. The president for 2020 is Ruth Rigg.
Forthcoming federation events include a coffee morning at Ulverston, and a Christmas celebration at Kendal Parish Church.

Meetings are usually held on the second Tuesday of the month(7.30pm) at the public hall.

More information is available from Ruth Rigg on 01539-722896 or Chris Bowness on 01539-725880.

The next meeting will be held on December 10, when members will be making Christmas decorations.

THE public hall has had a facelift. The main hall has been redecorated, and thanks to a donation from the Community Solar Park Fund a new audio system plus a new screen and projector have been installed.

Along with B4RN high-speed broadband this will be of great benefit to all hall users. For all information and bookings, visit: oldhuttonhall@gmail.com.
