Describe a typical Christmas Day in your household.

We tend to spend Christmas at our daughter’s now, due to the addition of grandchildren and the sheer joy of seeing them opening their presents. This is usually followed by a very hearty breakfast with Bucks Fizz.

A walk is always scheduled in, usually around Tarn Hows (with the world and his wife) then up to Black Cragg if we have the energy. A splendid dinner follows early evening with everyone, including the little ones, helping out.

Which was your best Christmas – and why?

Difficult this one, as our daughter’s fifth Christmas was quite magical. Likewise, I think the granddaughters at age six and two respectively will be enormous fun this year.

Who do you think would make the most entertaining guest to invite to Christmas dinner (dead or alive) – and why?

Christmas is such a fun time for the children. So, someone like Roald Dahl (much loved in our family) would be wonderful to perhaps regale us with a story or two.

What was your best Christmas present as a child?

My first bicycle when I was six years old. It was second hand and painted red. Sadly my father forbade me from riding it as he caught me going through some crossroads without looking.

What is your favourite carol or Christmas pop song – and why?

Definitely Silent Night. I especially like the Bing Crosby version. The first play of the season nearly always makes me cry.

What is your favourite festive ramble for walking off all the mince pies and turkey?

Probably the Tarn Hows walk. It’s such a joy to see so many happy families walking off the Christmas indulgences, with the little ones on their new bikes and scooters.

If you could spend Christmas Day anywhere in the world, apart from at home, where would it be – and why?

Anywhere in the world. Italy is my favourite country to visit. I adore Venice but it may be cold there so perhaps Sardinia where I get the Italian influence with a bit of warmth.
