HIGHWAYS England will be making modifications to a road bridge over the M6 near Moss End from November 11, for approximately four weeks.

There will be temporary road closures and signs will be showing suitable alternative route for vehicles.

PUPILS at St Patrick’s CE School will be able to dress up as Rock Stars on November 6 when the new times tables initiative is launched.

This has proved to be a fun but effective way of engaging children in mastering numeracy skills.

An open morning for those starting reception in September 2020 will be held on November 5 (9.30am or 11am). No appointment is needed.

STARS of the week certificates were awarded to Alicia Watts for being sensible and mature, Georgia Wightman for trying hard in spelling, and Benji Sanday for being kind, helpful and setting a good example.

The headteacher’s award was presented to Mia Young for an excellent attitude to work.

OLD HUTTON...

CONGRATULATIONS to all the KS2 pupils at the primary school who took part in the inter-school cross-country competition at Queen Katherine School.

They were all terrific for completing the course in what has been named - the worst weather we have had.

The children looked amazing in their yellow-themed outfits to raise awareness and money for World Mental Health Day. All monies will be donated to Young Minds.

Children at the pre-school and playgroup have had a lovely week exploring autumn leaves, fruits and seeds and making Gruffalo crumble.

ENDMOOR and District Community First Responders’ annual fundraising coffee morning will be held on Saturday, October 26 (10am-noon) at The Club Inn, Endmoor.

There will be the usual grand raffle. Entry price includes a drink and a biscuit.

THE pre-school and playgroup will be holding a Hallowe’en party for children up to age five and their siblings on Saturday, October 26 (3pm) at the public hall.

There will be spooky games, dancing and a buffet tea. Fancy dress is optional.

MEMBERS of the WI welcomed a local antiques dealer to their meeting.

Most of them had brought an item or two for his comments, but no one had anything as old as two of his items which were thousands of years old, one of which was a model of a Chinese kitchen which was part of a burial ritual.

On November 12 the annual meeting takes place, when members will review the events of the last year and look forward to next year during which the federation will celebrate its centenary.

WI meeting's are usually held at the public hall on the second Tuesday of the month (7.30pm).

BURTON-IN-KENDAL...

THE October parish council meeting considered the amended plans for the construction of 28 properties on the field north of Boon Town.

The revised plans had addressed many of the concerns previously raised by the council, therefore, with the proviso that drainage would still present a problem in one area, the council passed the new plan with no objection.

The application to remove and replace existing floor structure and walls at the Royal Hotel was considered as necessary work and was approved.

A lengthy discussion followed over the failure of the developer to fulfill many of the original planning conditions at Church Bank Gardens.

These conditions concerned matters relating to the highway and footpaths, but also touched on the layout of the site and flooding and drainage concerns.

It was also reported that the developer had not yet paid the £50,000 Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) to South Lakeland District Council (SLDC), £8,000 of which would eventually accru to the parish.

It was therefore decided to send a comprehensive letter detailing these omissions to the chief executive of SLDC with copies to other relevant departments.

Over the last two years the parish had received CIL money and the next item was to consider whether £11,000 of this should be used to cover some of the shortfall of £18,500 needed to complete the drainage improvement work on Main Street.

Arguments were put from both sides. Although Cumbria County Council who would be responsible did not have the funds and therefore there was the danger that the conservation scheme would proceed without the drainage being rectified.

Additionally, should the funds be used to start improvements to the villages drainage system it was likely the other funds would be forthcoming to continue the work in other areas.

Against the motion was the argument that this was the county’s responsibility and that the parish would be losing funds which could be spent in other ways.

At the vote the council was evenly split with the chairman’s deciding vote in favour of allocating £11,000 to the drainage scheme.
Letters had been sent to residents of the Square outlining parking restrictions during the planned works.

A councillor reported that the headmaster of Burton Morewood School had offered the use of the school grounds for parking during the works between the hours of 5pm to 8am.
The council also agreed to purchase more wild daffodil bulbs to continue planting on the A6070 to the south.

Burton school had been connected to the B4RN system and diocesan approval had been granted for the church plaque memorial, but a faculty would now have to be applied for.

DUE TO the indisposition of the advertised Burton WI speaker, Bryan Yorke Burton’s genial bird-man stepped in to present an interesting talk entitled Birds and Orchids of Hutton Roof.

Bryan has a reputation not only as an expert ornithologist but also that unique ability to inform and entertain with amusing anecdotes and quirky drawings, often leaving audiences asking for more.

On this occasion he did not disappoint, alongside excellent commentary and photography it emerged that he is involved with Trekellan, a website run by members of
the Dutch Onithilogical group who collect and collate all of the bird migration records from people willing to be associated with this project.

The idea is to share  migration data then a picture can be formed to show how birds world wide are fairing during migration; a time consuming task seamlessly absorbed into an already busy schedule.
