SPEAKER at the Kendal Rotary meeting was one of its own members, Margaret Belk, who had recently visited the Bentley car factory as the company is celebrating 100 years of production.

She gave an illustrated presentation of her trip and gave a potted history of the firm ending with a catalogue of their current models and culmination in the prototype concept for 2030.

Margaret's talk provides a fascination insight into one of Britain’s premium car brands. 

KENDAL Castle WI experienced a well-attended meeting which included two visitors. Caroline Wilkinson, a member of the Guild of Jewellery Designers, gave an insight into hallmarking and craft jewellery making.

She explained her passion for recycling old jewellery as a hobby and how her hobby became a business. Some beautiful samples of her work were on display. 
Ladies who lunch had a very enjoyable meal at Carus Green Golf Club.

The November meal will be at The Italian Café.
Twelve members attended a federation walk at Windermere WI followed by an excellent afternoon tea. 
There is an exciting diary planned for next year and new members are welcome.

KENDAL Fellwalkers’ A group began Sunday’s walk in the quiet valley of Swindale.

The Old Corpse Road led to Mardale from where they followed the fine Long Stile ridge to High Street. They continued to High Raise then dropped down to join the lake shore path to Burnbanks.

The short climb by Scalebarrow Knott took them back to Swindale. The B group followed the valley of Tongue Gill from Grasmere to Fairfield. They returned along the ridge to Nab Scar and Rydal, taking the Coffin Route back to Grasmere.

In Langdale, the C group climbed from Blea Tarn to the quiet summit of Blake Rigg. They returned over Side Pike, Lingmoor and Little Langdale, visiting Cathedral Cave and Ting Mound on the way. 
The Lakes Flower Club held its annual meeting which was well attended and following the business an afternoon tea was served. 

The next meeting will be at Skelsmergh Community Hall on November 20 (2pm), when the demonstrator John Dalton will be making a return visit from Carlisle. The title of his demonstration will be The Classical Christmas and there will be a Christmas stall. ANTONY Mulligan from Eric Wright and Dave Lang of Cumbria County Council gave an excellent talk to a joint meeting of the Kendal and District Engineering Society and the Institute of Civil Engineers on the flood repairs or the A591 and the A684 near Kendal. Complicated culvert repairs and lots of design, hydro, legal and civils issues were described. They also touched on future projects like the new Pooley Bridge. Eric Wright, based in Preston, is owned by a charitable trust that puts all the profit back into the company or into support for under privileged children via a facility at Coniston. The next meeting is on Climate Change, on October 31 (7.15pm) at the Castle Green Hotel.
