AN EMERGENCY operation to rescue three children from 'quicksand-like' mud took place over the weekend.
Crews from Hyndburn and Darwen were called to Higham Playing Fields in Accrington at around 6.30pm on Saturday following reports that the youngsters, of secondary school age, were stuck in deep mud.
A spokesman from Hyndburn fire station said: "By the time we had arrived, one child had already been rescued from the mud.
"We used a ladder to gain access to the remaining two and dig them out. The area was very boggy and the mud was like quicksand - the mud was up past their knees.
“They were cold but no ambulances were required.”
A drone was also used to assist with the rescue.
Crews were in attendance for approximately 30 minutes.
