SOME of the country’s leading young singers will be heading to Blackburn later this month for the Kathleen Ferrier Bursary competition.

Kathleen Ferrier rose from obscurity - at one point she worked at Blackburn telephone exchange - to become one of the world’s leading opera singers.

The bursary in her memory is open to vocal students just beginning their second year of study at each of the eight major music colleges in England. The winner will receive £3,000 to help with their studies.

This year - the 24th bursary competition - will see singers from Canada, Italy and Singapore joining students from around the UK. Heats will be held at King George’s Hall, Blackburn, on Sunday, October 27 starting at 10am. The final starts at 7pm.

On Saturday, October 26, Pleasington Priory will host the Bursary Prizewinners’ Annual Recital featuring Laurence Kilsby (tenor) from the Royal College of Music, accompanied by Ella O’Neil and Rachel Roper (Mezzo) from the Guildhall School of Music, accompanied by Jongsun Woo.

Tickets for both the recital and the bursary competition will be available on the door.
