THE Friends of St Peter’s Church, Field Broughton, are hosting a harvest supper tomorrow (Friday, 7.30pm) at the parish rooms.

CARTMEL Peninsula Local History Society will meet tonight (Thursday, 7.30pm) at the village hall, for a talk by Prof Peter Roebuck on Cattle Droving Through Cumbria from 1600 to 1900. 

CARTMEL Antiques Fair will be held from tomorrow (Friday) to Sunday (10am- 4.30pm) Sunday (10am-4pm) at the village hall. 

THERE will be an Apple Pressing Day on October 6 (10.30am-3pm) at the village hall.

People are invited to take along both eating and cooking apples for pressing.

Clean plastic containers (such as milk bottles) will be required with 10 kilograms of apples producing around five litres of juice.

NEWTON and Field Broughton WI will meet on Wednesday, October 9 (7.30pm) at Lindale Village Hall for their annual meeting. New members are welcome.

 

GRANGE-OVER-SANDS...

GRANGE Probus Club’s next meeting will be on October 14 (10.30am-noon), when David Walmsley will talk about the Natural History of Bees.

The club welcomes retired men and women as members and meets on the second Monday of every month, at the Netherwood Hotel.

THE coffee morning held at the parish hall raised £256 for the funds of St Anne’s Parish Church.

IAN Jones gave a magic lantern tour of the Lakes from Victorian glass plate negatives to 31 members of the Bateman Club.

He began his talk by explaining how a magic lantern works and went on to show a variety of slides via his computer.

They were mainly of the Lake District dating back to the 1800s and Ian was able to give a brief history of many of the buildings shown on the slides. The next meeting of the Bateman Club will be on October 10 when Rosie Cumella will talk about the Lake District Calvert Trust.

 

NATLAND AND OXENHOLME...

NATLAND and Oxenholme WI president Marion Want welcomed 29 members to the meeting following the summer break.

She thanked Melanie Thorp for the beautiful flowers. 
A number of members had attended the Crosscrake Centenary Exhibition at Sedgwick Village Hall and enjoyed a number of interesting displays and afternoon tea.

At the Westmorland County Show, Natland & Oxenholme WI won first prize for a tin of six biscuits and the cup for the most points in the preserves section. 
President Marion introduced the speaker, Philip Caine from Barrow-in-Furness, whose talk was entitled From Barrow to Baghdad.

Philip spoke about his life and career in catering, hotel, logistics and facilities management in the UK, France, Algeria, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Dubai and Baghdad.

He gave an interesting talk on his wide experiences over the years, which included meeting the KGB that gave him a wealth of material for his seven published novels. 
The next meeting is on October 16 (7.30pm) at Natland Village Hall, when the speaker will be Margaret Lister presenting a talk on Our Colourful World. 

HARVEST Festival at St Mark’s Church will be celebrated on Sunday, October 6 (10am).

A hot-pot supper and auction of produce will be held (5pm) at the village hall.

THE ladies of the parish will be decorating St Anne’s Parish Church on Saturday, October 5 (2pm) in readiness for the harvest festival being held the following day. All offers of help will be most welcome.
