CROSTHWAITE...

CROSTHWAITE and Lyth WI was entertained and enlightened by Mike Young, a geophysicist, who talked about his many years of working in Oman, as well as his family life abroad during the 1980s and 1990s.

Members were taken on a virtual tour of Muscat, the capital, and surrounding area.

The supply of water is critical for Oman’s existence and economy and was the reason Mike worked there. The demand for water continues to increase and its supply is finite.

Mike was successful in his quest, as additional aquifers were located. This means that Oman has up to 50 years supply. Despite this success, Oman still needs to conserve water supplies and find new sources, as agriculture accounts for 90 per cent of its usage.

CROSTHWAITE Primary School is collecting the Aldi kit for school stickers that are being offered to shoppers. If the school collects 300 stickers they will receive a customised kit, plus entry into a £20,000 draw. Pass any vouchers you collect to the school office.

THE new season of Lyth Valley Farmers Discussion Group starts on Monday, September 30. The group meets on alternate Mondays (8pm) at The Gilpin Inn.

Guest speaker is Mike Sanderson who will present My Experience in New Zealand and Australia. For membership details telephone R. Metcalf on 015395-821352.

UNDERBARROW...

Marrow Day was an enjoyable and well supported.

The usual attractions were appreciated by all, including the dog show and tossing the sheaf competition. The presentations were made to the Paddlers for Life and the Movember Foundation by the committee chairperson Maggie Kaye.

The marrows had not done well this year and were smaller, but a good variety were represented as well as pumpkins which were a first this year. The afternoon was finished off by the live 60s band Strawberry Fields. Thanks to everyone who came along and donated items, and to the organisers and helpers, for making this a great village event.
