A ROAD remains closed this morning after a car crashed into a railway bridge.

Officers and firefighters were called to Altham Lane in Altham during the early hours following reports of a car crashing into a bridge.

By the time they arrived, the driver had fled the scene.

A spokesman from Burnley fire station said: "We attended the incident this morning and helped secure the area.

"The driver of the vehicle had already left by the time emergency services arrived.

"There was some damage to the wall and the bridge, and the police remained on scene after we left."

This afternoon, a Lancashire Police spokesman urged road users not to use the road.

A statement read: "Due to damage to a Network Rail bridge, Altham Lane is closed between Huncoat and Altham. Do not drive through the closures and don't interfere with road safty equiptment - you may be prosecuted."

A section of Altham Lane is still currently closed.
