AN ANIMAL rescue centre celebrated their annual open day in wicked style over the weekend, with a heroes and villains themed bash.

Hundreds from all over Lancashire turned out to support local equine charity, the Horse and Pony Protection Association (HAPPA), as they held their biggest event of the year.

Lucky visitors were treated to an afternoon of sunshine at Shores Hey Farm in Burnley, as the magical heroes and villains themed open day took place.

For a £2 donation, visitors were able to meet some of the centre’s residents, watch workshops, listen to educational talks, and have fun with the array of stalls, pony riding and grooming activities that were on offer.

Jennifer Stansfield, who attended the open day with her three grandchildren, said: “It has been a wonderful afternoon.

“I have my grandchildren with me, who vary from three-years-old to 15 and there has been something for each and everyone of them to enjoy. I think the highlight was the spectacular horse show that was put on in the main arena - the horses were dressed as super heroes!”

After the main event, which was just one of the many demonstrations taking place on the day, visitors were able to get up close and personal with the superhero ponies - and for an extra donation could get a photo taken to take home.

Mark Worsey was at the open day with his wife Nina and their two children Bran and Christopher.

He said: “We try to come every year as they always put on a great event and the children have a really good time. It’s a fantastic way to spend a Saturday afternoon and it’s good to get behind the charity, everyone here works tirelessly for the animals.”

Volunteers put on several events throughout the year, from summer BBQs to ‘own a pony’ days and workshops, there is always something going on to keep visitors coming back for more.
