THE Picturemakers Autumn exhibition at Mid Wales Arts Centre, Caersws, runs from September 8 to October 11 and October 26 to November 3.

It has been arranged to coincide with the 90th anniversary of the birth of the late John Paddison (1929 - 2000), an important figure in the development of 20th century sculpture and stone carving.

John Paddison was a comtemporary of Jacob Epstein, Eric Gill, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth and exhibited alongside them.

John Paddison began his training at Wolverhampton College of Art in 1945, following army service. He studied at the Royal College under Professor John Skeaping and Frank Dobson, and returned to Wolverhampton to become head of sculpture – a position he held until retirement.

He showed at Yorkshire Sculpture Park and has work in public collections including Coventry Cathedral, Birmingham City Art Gallery and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. John Paddison had a studio in Llanidloes, where he spent his last years.

Cathy Knapp, owner of the arts centre, said: "Mid Wales Arts is fortunate to have a considerable collection of his work on permanent exhibition, thanks to the Scrase family who wished it to be available to the public.

"The Picturemakers are a group of 11 artists from diverse backgrounds and creative disciplines based in Mid Wales.  Members meet regularly to discuss work in progress and provide mutual support. They include: Patrick Owen, Lindsay Davies, Kim James-Williams, Karl Sylvester, Moira Vincentelli, Rosemary Fahimi, Mike Laxton, Greteli Morton, Shelley Upton, Ann Williams and Philip Huckin.

"The exhibition will be made up of paintings, drawings and mixed media. Some of the paintings have been specially created to pay tribute to and celebrate the achievements of John Paddison by drawing inspiration from his wide choice of subjects. They will be displayed alongside his sculptures."

The exhibition will be open Thursday to Sunday 11am to 4pm or by appointment. For further information contact office@midwalesarts.org.uk/01686 688369.
